Felix Mendelssohn – Concerto for Violin, Piano and Orchestra in D Minor MWV O4
Felix Mendelssohn – Concerto for Violin in D Minor
Joseph Haydn – Concerto for Violin, Piano and Strings in F Major, Hob. XVIII:6
Johann Nepomuk Hummel – Concerto for Violin, Piano and Orchestra in G Major, Op. 17
This project began with the desire to record a CD featuring the double concertos for solo violin, solo piano and strings by Joseph Haydn and Felix Mendelssohn. We hoped to shine a light on these oft-neglected works that are not currently a part of the standard concerto repertoire but certainly deserve to be.
While in the early stages of the project, we discovered two additional works perfect for this collection: a lesser-known Mendelssohn concerto in D minor for violin and strings, and another double concerto for violin, piano and orchestra by Johann Nepomuk Hummel.
We were also fortunate enough to discover a score of the Mendelssohn double concerto for violin, piano and FULL orchestra in a German library, re-orchestrated by the composer during the last years of his life to include 12 winds and timpani. We immediately decided to include this fully orchestrated version on the CD, as our research indicated there have only been three previous recordings of this expanded edition.
